Forget Critical Mass, Ignite the Core

Most approaches to bringing about organizational change have traditionally been driven by  the Top Management. These often take the form of a series of top-down “cascade workshops” around the theme for the change initiative.  The underlying assumption is that the “management line of thinking”   will percolate down the layers of the organization so that alignment and change happens in a structured way i.e. top-down. If the change is not a strategic issue but rather a question of building skills or awareness, the approach is often bottom- up. In both cases, the underlying idea is to cover as much of the population as possible (to generate “critical mass”) and bring about the desired change.
