At the Pragati Leadership Inspiring & Successful Leadership Awards 2025, the room was filled with industry veterans, but few stories resonated as deeply as that of Capt. Raman Raina, Head of HR at Grindwell Norton Ltd. Named the People Leader of the Year, Capt. Raina was recognized for his role in steering massive HR transformations and advancing inclusive, sustainable, and digitally enabled people practices.
His acceptance speech, however, didn’t focus purely on corporate environments. Instead, it took us back to a swimming pool in Chennai, where a young army cadet faced his greatest fear.

Schedule your CallThe 10-Meter Board: A Lesson in Resilience
Capt. Raina shared a gripping story from his days at the Officers Training Academy. Despite a deep-seated phobia of water, he found himself standing on a 10-meter diving board. There was no ladder to go back down—the only way was through the water. After several minutes of frozen terror and a blunt push from his commanding officer, he plunged into the pool.
“That 15 to 20 minutes taught me… if my worst fear can come out in 10 minutes, what all can I be capable of doing in my lifetime?” he reflected. This mindset of overcoming the “impossible” is a cornerstone of any Strategic Leadership Development Program. It’s the ability to face organizational “plunges”—whether it’s a digital overhaul or a cultural shift—with the courage cultivated through past challenges.
Leading from the Front, But Never Alone
Transitioning from the Indian Army to a corporate HR role requires a profound understanding of human psychology. Capt. Raina distilled his leadership philosophy into two core tenets:
- Lead from the Front: Setting the standard and being willing to take the first leap.
- Never Walk Alone: True transformation is impossible in isolation.
“I still believe that if you walk with people, you trust them, and when you trust them, magic happens,” he told the audience. This emphasis on collective growth is exactly what we advocate for in our Employee Leadership Training. When leaders move away from a top-down “command” structure and toward a Culture of Management Coaching, they empower their teams to innovate without fear.
Advancing Inclusive and Digital Practices
Under Capt. Raina’s leadership, Grindwell Norton has seen a shift toward more sustainable and digitally enabled HR practices. This isn’t just about adopting new tools; it’s a Cultural Transformation Training exercise that aligns the workforce with modern global standards. By fostering an environment of trust, he has ensured that his team is not just adapting to digital changes but is actively steering them.
Organizations looking to replicate this success often invest in Corporate Leadership Development Programs that emphasize the “human” in HR. Capt. Raina’s journey proves that the most effective leaders are those who have mastered their own fears and now focus on building the confidence of those around them.
Capt. Raman Raina’s story is a powerful reminder that leadership is forged in moments of discomfort. Whether it’s a cadet on a diving board or an HR head navigating a global merger, the principles remain the same: courage, trust, and the refusal to walk alone. At Pragati Leadership, we are proud to celebrate leaders who bring this level of authenticity and “army-grade” resilience to the corporate world.
